If you are looking for a home in Cerritos, Artesia, or La Palma, chances are the ABC Unified School District (ABCUSD) is a major factor in your search.
Cerritos is famous for its top-tier education, and rightly so. But there is one major misconception that trips up homebuyers every single year: The Whitney High School Myth.
As a local agent and a dad, I help families navigate these boundaries every day. Here is the honest truth about how school boundaries actually work in our city—and how to make sure you buy the right home for your family’s education goals.
1. The Big Question: If I live near Whitney High, does my child get in?
The Short Answer: No.
The Explanation: Whitney High School (grades 7-12) is consistently ranked as the #1 high school in California, but it is not a residential boundary school. You cannot simply buy a house across the street on Shoemaker Avenue and enroll your child.
It is an Exam School: Admission is based entirely on an entrance exam and academic criteria.
Residency is a Prerequisite: You must live within the ABC Unified School District boundaries (Cerritos, Artesia, Hawaiian Gardens, portions of Lakewood/Norwalk) to even be eligible to take the test.
The Strategy: Buying a home in Cerritos gives your child the opportunity to test into Whitney. If they don't test in, they will attend their "home" high school based on your address.
2. So, which High School will my child attend?
If your student does not attend Whitney (or chooses not to), they are assigned to a high school based strictly on where your home is located. This is where "Zillow" can be misleading.
The district is primarily divided into these attendance zones:
Cerritos High School: Generally serves the central and northern parts of Cerritos. It is known for strong academics and a spirited athletics program.
Gahr High School: Located in Cerritos but serves specific neighborhoods in Cerritos and Artesia. It is famous for its "STEAM" (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) magnet program.
Artesia High School: Serves the Artesia area and parts of the surrounding community.
Expert Tip: Do not assume a "Cerritos" address automatically means "Cerritos High School." The boundary lines can sometimes split neighborhoods or even streets.
3. What are "Schools of Choice"?
One of the best things about ABCUSD is the "Schools of Choice" program. This allows you to apply for specific elementary and middle schools regardless of your neighborhood, often through a lottery system.
Popular "Choice" schools include:
Leal Elementary: Focuses on Arts & Technology.
Nixon Academy: A multimedia production magnet.
Haskell Middle School: Known for its STEM emphasis.
If you buy a home in Artesia, for example, you can still apply for your child to attend a magnet school in the heart of Cerritos, provided you handle the application process correctly.
4. How do I verify the school for a specific house?
Never rely on the "Nearby Schools" section on real estate websites like Redfin or Zillow. They are third-party data feeds and are frequently outdated or incorrect regarding complex boundary lines.
The Only Way to Be Sure:
Visit the official ABC Unified School District "School Locator" tool.
Call the district office directly to confirm the address.
Ask Me: As part of my service to buyers, I verify the specific school assignment for every home we view to ensure there are no surprises after escrow closes.
Summary for Homebuyers
Buying in Cerritos = Opportunity: It guarantees you are in the district, but not in a specific school like Whitney.
Check the High School Boundary: Know whether the home feeds into Cerritos High, Gahr, or Artesia High before you write an offer.
Plan Ahead: If you want a "School of Choice," watch the district calendar for application deadlines (usually in early spring).
